Dog Bite Injury

Call us 24/7 for
immediate assistance

The province of Alberta has legislation in place that gives authority to order a dog put down if it is deemed dangerous under the Dangerous Dogs Act. For the majority dog bite injuries, the dog owner’s home insurance will cover medical bills and injuries that stem from the dog bite incident. Victims of unprovoked dog attacks may be entitled to file a claim for compensation with the dog owner’s home insurance policy which would cover medical treatment, lost wages as well as pain and suffering damages. However, some home owner insurance polices have specific exclusions for dog bite injuries. Furthermore, under the common law principle of scienter, the owner is not found liable unless the dog has demonstrated a previous propensity to bite a person or another dog. If the “first bite” came out of nowhere and the owner was not aware that the dog had a propensity to bite, you will have difficulty holding the owner liable for your injuries.

The above information is just the basic framework of the very complex and often confusing system which can be very difficult to navigate without the assistance of an experienced personal injury law firm. There are strict time limits which must be adhered to in order to be eligible for certain benefits and if these limitations are missed, the victim may be prevented from filing a claim altogether.

Contact Barapp Law Firm and one of our experienced personal injury lawyers will gladly provide you with a free consultation, go over your options and potential entitlements to compensation. We work a contingency basis which mean you don’t have to pay any legal fees until we win your case and you receive your settlement.
